VENICE HIGHLIGHTS: A VISITOR’S GUIDE
The Gallerie dell’Accademia
The Gallerie dell’Accademia contains masterpieces of Venetian painting up to the 18th century, generally arranged chronologically though some thematic displays are evident. It was originally the gallery of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, the art academy of Venice, from which it became independent in 1879
Doge’s Palace
Formerly the Doge's residence and the seat of Venetian government, the Palace is the very symbol of Venice and a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, the Doge’s Palace is an impressive structure composed of layers of building elements and ornamentation, from its 14th and 15th century original foundations to the significant Renaissance and opulent Mannerist adjunctions.
Peggy Guggenheim Collection
Welcome to the Venetian home of a great collector and discover the most important museum of European and American art of the twentieth century in Italy.
Murano Island
Murano is one of the major islands in the Venice Lagoon. It's mainly famous for its glass factories and laboratories, and if you have a bit more than a couple of days to spend in Venice, you should consider paying a visit there.
Burano Island
Burano island is famous for its lace and coloured houses: a really recommendable visit. A legend is told that the houses were painted with bright and cheerful colours so that the sailors could see them on the gloomy and foggy days. The island with about 4,000 inhabitants has a curious leaning bell tower that is visible from a distance.
Cannaregio district
Venice consists of six larger districts. Cannaregio is one of these districts and is the district most north. In Cannaregio you will find the Jewish quarter with synagogues and a Jewish museum. There are also kosher restaurants and Jewish shops. Furthermore, the non-touristy Cannaregio district is known for the beautiful churches. A lovely neighborhood to make a walk.
SHOPPING IN VENICE
Fondaco Dei Tedeschi
First constructed in 1228 the Fondaco dei Tedeschi is one of Venice’s largest and most recognizable buildings. It was used as a trading post for German merchants, a customs house under Napoleon, and a post office under Mussolini. In shopping center you will find many well-known and luxury brands and much more, souvenirs or wine. Highly recommended is to reserve a free ticket for the rooftop terrace. It has one of the best views over Venice and you see the city with all its sights in a completely different way than from the small streets or from the water.
The Boulevard of Fashion
For the lovers of fashion, Calle XXII Marzo – only a few steps from Saint Mark’s Square – is where you can find the most important Made in Italy brands. Here stand the biggest names in Italian fashion: Prada, Gucci, Ferragamo, Bulgari, Valentino, Giorgio Armani. Shop after shop, these elegant boutiques line one of the most chic calli in the city; their beautiful window displays inviting you inside to look around.
Perfumery “The Merchant of Venice”
The Merchant of Venice represents the Art of Perfumery of Venice. It draws attention to the everlasting role of the city as an essential force in the perfumery tradition throughout the world, and it is intended to highlight the tradition that made Italy, and particularly Venice, central to the history of perfumery. A luxury line that offers a large assortment of exclusive Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette.
Bookstore “Libreria Acqua Alta”
You will not find a bookshop like this anywhere. The interior is special because of the piles of books that you will find inside. Because of the floods that often take place in Venice every winter, there are books piled in a boat or bathtub. You will also immediately notice something when you enter the store of Libreria Acqua Alta: there are cats, who lie on the books and sit at the cash register.
C. Longa Santa Maria Formosa, 5176b, 30122 Venice, Italy
Rialto Market
This market is located on the Grand Canal and you can get all kinds of food at the Rialto Market, such as vegetables, fruit, fish, meat, but also spices. All the goods are beautifully displayed so that you can take a good look. If you don't want to buy anything on the market, you will get a good impression of an Italian fresh market.
Glass
Traditionally, Murano glass is made from mineral sands melted together in a high-temperature furnace at 1200°C to 1400°C. At this temperature, the sands fuse into liquid glass. Find the best glass creations at Venini, Nason Moretti, Carlo Moretti, Massimiliano Schiavon.
Venetian masks
Venetian masks were traditionally worn to protect the identity of the wearer and were eventually worn during the Venetian Carnival. Find original masks at Cà Macana, Atelier Marega and Kartaruga.
